A Little Piece Of My Heart | Kaleigh Baker as ‘Janis Joplin, Little Girl Blue’ | Live Review & Ticket Giveaway | Orlando Fringe Festival | May 16, 2015

by • May 17, 2015

Sometimes her wails turned into out-of-key screams. It was a little uncomfortable. And those were the best parts. She tucked flowers in our hair. Her soul reflecting off the off-white walls was hauntingly beautiful.

When it breaks, you’ll know it. You’ll be a few songs in. You’ll be tapping and smiling and cheering and completely lost … lost in the raw power of Janis Joplin living and drinking and burning and bleeding, reincarnated through Kaleigh Baker.

It took all I had not to stand up in the theater. Her costume changes reflected various points in Janis Joplin’s life, all the way up to her untimely death. Baker’s ability to so quickly translate from slummy to diva left us all slack-jawed, drooling even. Not from just the sex appeal, but the sheer passion pouring out of her. That is sexy.

Kaleigh Baker is Janis Joplin. You hear it in her piercing laugh. You taste it in her whiskey. You feel it when she lets out those soul shaking rumbles … and when she gasps for breath between notes and doesn’t bother to stop singing, she’s bleeding absolute perfection. Even the flaws fit right.

“I’m not really thinking, I’m just trying to feel.

Director Andy Matchett doubled as an actor, performing seamlessly as television talk show host Dick Cavett. Actress Amanda Warren performed as Joplin’s sister Laura. She sat stone cold in a cherry dress, frozen into character between her parts. I’ve never seen someone so effortlessly fight the urge to move to music like she did. She was my favorite surprise character (there’s other surprises, too, but I’m not telling. You’ll just have to see for yourself).

And, the band. Holy. Shit. That band. Some of Orlando’s finest musicians shared the stage to build and explode the timeless tunes behind Joplin’s iconic voice. I spoke with keyboardist Dave Gibbs after and he explained some of the innate details the band planned out. Things to ensure the performance was as authentically ’60s as possible, like not crossing hands while keeping the keyboards organically organ-like. And that fro though (you’ll see what I mean).

All I can say is, Ms. Baker took another little piece of my heart, baby. And, after seeing her last night, I’d let her have the rest of the damn thing, too. It’s nights like this that remind me Orlando is very alive (and it doesn’t suck).

I don’t what we’re giving away here. It’s either two tickets to a show at the Orlando Fringe Festival or two boarding passes to a time machine straight to the ’60s. It was fucking perfect.
