Hey man… JJ Grey and Mofro are playing Jannus Live out in St. Petersburg New Year’s Eve (TICKETS HERE), and you’re still trying to figure out if you want to go? I do not pity nor envy you, because that should be the easiest decision you have to make this year! JJ Grey is one of the best blue collar blues/country/soul singer/songwriters I’ve probably listened to since Father John Misty and St. Paul, and if you haven’t had the chance to see him so far, this is an amazing opportunity to rectify that injustice.
JJ Grey and the whole Mofro crew initially called Jacksonville, Florida home, so you know they’re going to bring that hometown energy to Jannus. Initially tracing their roots back to the mid ’90s, JJ Grey and Mofro have slowly but surely built up a whole record catalogue of 9 albums, chock full of hit songs, guest features, and some goddamn good music. Thankfully for us and them, their live show is sooo much more than just their music. Filled to the brim with energy, danceable and singalong songs, every JJ Grey song is written to make you feel, reflect, dance or bleed it out and come out swinging, ready for more.
If I had to categorize JJ Grey and Mofro, I would be hard pressed to just fit them into just a couple of genres. Drawing from some funk, country, pop, blues & R&B, alternative, and soul, this is a band that will not be held down to just one style. I’m reminded of Toots and the Maytals, Allman Betts Band, and Drive-By Truckers back when Jason Isbell used to be with them. It’s the kind of music I put on when I get home from work and just need to chill out, smoke a bowl, and forget about my problems. I could throw on something like “The Sun Is Shining Down” and just relax:
Or maybe get my feet moving while I groove out to “The Sweetest Thing,” which actually guested Toots Hibbert, (RIP):
But I think the one that will always get everyone going is going to be “Orange Blossoms,” all about the flowers that Florida is famous for:
Seriously! If I haven’t convinced you to go check out JJ Grey and Mofro out at Jannus Live New Years Eve, then you are bringing in the New Year right. I still can’t believe 2021 is almost over, because it’s been one hell of a shit show, but I would double jump and do a barrel roll to start it off on the right positive vibes that would come out of this phenomenal show. JJ Grey and Mofro are just what the doctors should be prescribing for everyone to welcome 2022 in on the right (or left) foot. You will most likely walk out ready to take on that new year by the horns.
