Allow us to plan your upcoming Saturday afternoon or night for you: Jake Shimabukuro is landing in The City Beautiful on April 22 at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. He’ll be doing two shows, one at 3 in the afternoon and another at 8pm.
I come by my curiosity honestly on this one. You need only watch a minute or two of a Shimabukuro video (any will do) with him wailing away on his ukulele for your jaw to drop. Let’s just say he does things on four strings that almost never happen. It’s as if he’s chosen to build a solid career of not just making music, but one also bent on breaking down genre barriers placed on his instrument. Instead of tackling Hawaiian island hula music, he’s taking on jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, folk, and flamenco instead.
It’s rare you see a musician so completely master his or her instrument. And it’s really pretty easy to listen to him play and feel like Shimabukuro is playing any instrument other than the one he’s actually renowned for. This is a concert it’ll be necessary to see to believe.
Millions of thumbs up on YouTube can’t be wrong. Go see him. Go marvel. Shake your head incredulously for a couple hours or more. Because we’ll be doing all those very same things.
