The five-piece band consisting of artists Jake Luppen, Nathan Stocker, Zach Stocker, Zach Sutton, Whistler Allen, and DeCarlo Jackson, have been friends since middle school where they met in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They formed to play as Hippo Campus in 2013, but many of them have played in other bands prior, such as Blatant Youth/Whistle Kid, Danger, Will Robinson/Northern. Shortly after forming Hippo Campus, the band released its first recorded music, a five track EP named Tarzan Rejects.

In November of 2014, Hippo Campus independently released their EP, Bashful Creatures before signing to Grand Jury records where a re-release of the EP was brought to fruition and released to the public with their new label. The boys went on to release other EPs, Landmark and Bambi, where popular sing-alongs such as their single “Way It Goes” gifted our ears with a windows-down-in-the-summertime, nostalgic feeling tune that seems to never get old.

The band has since released multiple singles and performed shows including big named festivals such Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, Summerfest, and Reading and Leeds. They also have performed on the popular show Conan and was named NPR Music’s favorite new artists of 2017. Other critical praise has been shown by a multitude of well-renowned music-loving sources. Clash Magazine calls the band a “refreshing blast of indie pop.” BBC Radio 1 calls them “one of the best bands in the United States.” And if this wasn’t enough to convince you to come to the show…listen to their new LP, I have no doubt it’ll win you over.

Hippo Campus new album LP3 was released in February 2022 and has already debuted as part of the “top 10” on seven Billboard charts in less than a year. In terms of songwriting, lead vocalist/guitarist Luppen explains in an interview with Grand Jury publication that “we wanted to place a priority on more personal lyrics and more self-referential storytelling as opposed to larger concepts like we did on Landmark and Bambi…The priority was on finding the feeling that we had in the early days – when we were really happy making music, you know.” The album has surpassed 12 million streams so far and their tour is almost completely SOLD OUT already. It is said that the band view their album as “the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is.”

Hippo Campus will be joined by CHAI, a Japanese all-girl pop band formed by two twin sisters alongside their two friends. CHAI is aiming to redefine the definition of kawaii (“cute” in Japanese) as they feel that everyone is “cute in their own way.” Their music is labeled as experimental pop, indie-dance and disco punk.
