Hip Hop news rode on a roller coaster of emotions this week. We got a little bit of the happy and the heartwarming. We also got a fair share of shade and drama. There was some ridiculousness. And there was also some sadness and loss. Here are some of this weeks’ most talked about Hip Hop news stories.

R.I.P. BIG KAP

Hip Hop lost a true giant in the game with the passing of prominent New York DJ and Funkmaster Flex affiliate Big Kap this past Wednesday. Many heads will probably know him best from 1999s The Tunnel album. Kap apparently had a new radio gig lined up in Atlanta, as well as a documentary in the works. He will be greatly missed in the Hip Hop community. Read the full story at this link.

KANYE CALLS INTO BIG BOY RADIO SHOW

So Help Me God? Nope. SWISH? Unh Unh. Waves? Scratch that. Among many other interesting topics (the recent social media beef with Wiz Khalifa, former lover Amber Rose, wife Kim Kardashian) Yeezy called into Big Boy’s L.A. morning radio show and expressed that his new album actually has no title. Yeezy season, indeed.

NEW JANELLE MONAE PEPSI SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL

If anyone can pull off a Super Bowl ad, it’s certainly Janelle Monae. She can be seen in a new Pepsi spot killing it to some old school classic music. And as we all know, we REALLY watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Now we have even more reason to! Check out Janelle’s spot below.

BIG SEAN’S INITIATIVE RAISES $50,000

Hip Hop’s philanthropic side came shining through once again. Big Sean’s #HealFlintKids initiative through his Sean Anderson Foundation has raised over $50,000 for the Flint Water Crisis. The campaign is schedule to end on April 6, so there is still plenty of time to donate. Click the image below for the full story.

GAME LOSES CASE, HIT WITH $10 MILLION LAWSUIT

Hip Hop’s ugly side was on display this week too. California emcee Game lost a case against former She Got Game reality show contestant Priscilla Rainey. Rainey accused Game of sexual assault on several occasions. Game responded via Instagram. Here’s a video from last year of a Rainey interview on ThisIs50.com where she calls Game out for the same incident.

HIP HOP REACTS TO THE DEATH OF EARTH, WIND AND FIRE FOUNDER MAURICE WHITE

White is unquestionably one of the most unique voices in music history. The founder and mastermind behind ’70s super group Earth, Wind and Fire, he passed away Thursday in L.A. Hip Hop artists like Questlove, Q-Tip, Jean Grae and Juicy J expressed condolences via social media.
