Another eventful week in the Hip Hop world has come and gone. It all started with Sunday’s salacious MTV VMAs, and just seemed to keep steamrolling from there. Here are a few of the biggest stories in Hip Hop from this past week.
KANYE WEST VMA SPEECH
Without a doubt the biggest Hip Hop and music story of the week was Kanye’s acceptance speech at the 2015 VMAs. It was brash, it was lengthy, it was at times incoherent and extremely muddled, but it was 100% Kanye. The emcee did a lot in the speech, even declaring in 2020 that he would run for POTUS. Which was responded to later in the week by current It-candidate Donald Trump as being “interesting.” Can we really picture Yeezy and the Donald in a head-to-head match-up for the White House? Here’s hoping it remains just a thought.
EMINEM LYRICS INCITE TEEN ARREST
A Fresno, CA teen is suspected of issuing terrorist threats via an Instagram post that featured lyrics of Eminem’s song “I’m Back.” Police officials say that there was much cause for concern, as the teen recently lost his mother, broke up with his girlfriend, quit his school football team and was not performing well in school. No one can truly say whether the teen was influenced by the lyrics of Marshall Mathers, although many would argue that the Instagram post is proof enough. To this day, teenagers and suggestive music lyrics still have the potential to be a dangerous mix.
MARCC ROSE ON 2PAC BIOPIC
On the heels of the success of “Straight Outta Compton,” actor Marcc Rose, who portrayed 2Pac in the film, spoke on the holdup of the 2pac biopic. Rose is reported as telling New York’s Hot 97 “Ebro In The Morning” show that the film biography on the iconic emcee had too many hands in the pot and was apparently going the way of the Aaliyah film from Lifetime. And if you know anything about that flick, you know how badly social media slayed it for its fallacies and poor casting choices. Let’s just hope that a film about such a historically major music figure such as ‘Pac will lean more towards what Dr. Dre and Ice Cube produced with “Compton.”
POWER 105.1 POWERHO– USE LINE UP
It’s quickly becoming one of the biggest brand name Hip Hop festivals in all of music. Sure, Hot 97 has Summer Jam, but New York’s Power 105.1 is putting a chokehold on mainstream Hip Hop with the Powerhouse concert. Happening Oct. 22, this year’s edition of Powerhouse will include performances by Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, Future, Fetty Wap, Jidenna, Meek Mill and Omarion. Pre sale tickets went on sale this week and they’re likely going fast. Looks like even with the declining relevance of radio, some stations are finding many more ways to keep fans craving more music.
