LIVE REVIEW: Goose
– St. Pete Pier, St. Petersburg, FL – October 31, 2024
Review by: Richie Williams

Finally, Goose came to Florida to do a proper run of shows through the state. Other than a couple of shows at festivals at Suwanee Music Park (Rising 2022, Hulaween 2023), Goose has not played any other shows in Florida to my recollection. So it goes without saying that the hype was high for this run, especially for the Thursday night St. Pete show which happened to fall on Halloween.

This was my first visit to a show at St. Pete Pier which offers an amazing outdoor venue surrounded by the waters of Tampa Bay. With clear skies and a shore breeze giving fans exceptional weather in the low 80s dipping into the high 70s, the sun set over a comfortable crowd ready to jam to two sets of Goose.

The band took the stage shortly after 6:45pm to the tune of the Stranger Things theme song. One by one, each member walked out dressed as a different character (Peter as Dustin Henderson, Rick as Steve Harrington, Trevor as Billy Hargrove, Jeff as Sheriff Jim Hopper, and Cotter as Eleven). Once all were on stage, the band collectively eased in to join playing along with the Stranger Things theme and turn it into a mild intro jam. The night would be filled with many 80s covers featured in the Stanger Things show.

The first set would start with four originals, “Dr. Darkness” followed by bass slappin’ “Yedi” and the echoes of “Silver Rising”, capped by one of my favorite Goose songs, “Wysteria Lane” which featured teases of the Stranger Things theme. A double dose of covers came next with Talking Head’s “Psycho Killer” (last time the band played this was in 2016) and Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” (first time played). Another favorite original of mine, “Mudhaven” would close out the set and featured the surf instrumental “Wipe Out” by Bob Berryhill (first time played) during the jam portion.

After a 30 minute set break, set two started around 8:30pm with a whirlwind of a cover in “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” by Dead or Alive (first time played). Continuing the alternating original/cover sequence, next was “Arrow” sandwiching a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” (first time played). Watch that entire segment in the video link below via Goose’s YouTube page. The set ended with another favor original of mine, the very dancy “Creatures” and a set closing cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears (first time played).

The encore would harp back to the show start with a proper playthrough jam of the Stranger Things theme song into “The Empress of Organos.” This was my fourth time seeing Goose and this show easily goes down as my favorite show. Oh, what a day to be living.
