What is the role of the comedian? Is it merely to make people laugh? Is it to make people think? Is it to shock? Is it potentially to shake people up and possibly offend them? Comedy, as an art, can be all these things. A comedian, as an artist, can choose their style and content to accomplish all of these outcomes with their performance.

Cut to my childhood memories of the continuously evolving comedic icon Leo Gallagher, appearing at The Plaza Live in Orlando on Saturday 8/29.  The recollection I have of a living room television gathering, watching one of a number of Gallagher’s “merely make people laugh” style television specials are of family enjoyment, bonding over light political, heavy prop provoked, trampoline bouncing and signature Sledge-O-Matic smashed fruit shared laughter. Those performances, with a decade of almost non-stop touring shows and more than most in the business 14 plus cable specials, rocketed Gallagher to comedy fame.

These days an older industry and accomplishment drama weary, Leo Gallagher delivers a show with what seems like a bit more pent up anger. It’s a darker, heavier right-wing leaning, racial and sexual orient stereotype slinging yet still prop and sledgehammer fruit smashing wielding show. His move to this abrasive tinged instead of vanilla flavored material has garnered some backlash. His new act, which sometimes pulls audience members onstage to swing the Sledge-O-Matic for themselves, has been ill received by some fans. In a 2014 Miami New Times interview Gallagher explained the political incorrect aspect of his newer material as “…it’s all an act.“

The evolution of an artist, a comedian with an act that is now challenging as well as entertaining, is what The Plaza Live audience can expect to see on Saturday night.
