TICKET GIVEAWAY: Five Iron Frenzy | Coming to BackBooth Orlando | Friday, August 14, 2015

I was a huge fan of ska music when I was in high school. Every chance I had to go to a ska show I went, even if my parents didn’t want me to go. A friend of mine turned me on to Five Iron Frenzy‘s second album Our Newest Album Ever! about a week before they were going to play a show in Ft. Lauderdale, just under an hour away from where I grew up. I loved the bands light-hearted, positive and often funny lyrics. I knew that this was going to be a fun show that I probably shouldn’t miss but I also knew that my parents wouldn’t want me driving to Ft. Lauderdale just months after getting my license. I made up some excuse about hanging out with a friend and my parents bought it. As long as I made it home by curfew and called them back every time they beeped me (Yes, I had a beeper. It was the ’90s), I was good to go (Check out one of my favorite songs “Handbook for the Sellout” from Our Newest Album Ever! below).

Five Iron Frenzy put on a great show that night. My friends and I danced our asses off for the entire set until I realized that if we didn’t leave before the encore, I wouldn’t make curfew and I would be grounded. I rounded up my friends to leave and reached in my pocket to check my beeper.  Apparently, it fell out of my pocket while I was dancing and was nowhere to be found. I didn’t know what to do, if I stayed to look for it I wouldn’t make curfew but if I came home without it I would be in just as much trouble. Luckily, as I was walking out I saw a friend from one of my classes and asked him to look for it after the show. I don’t know how he did it but he managed to find my beeper in the mound of dirt where the pit was after the show. It might have been covered in dirt but it still worked and I was able to get it back the next morning without my parents suspecting a thing.

Now I am a grown ass man and can stay out as late as I want without answering to anyone (except my wife). This Friday, August 14, 2015 I plan on dancing my ass off at BackBooth when Five Iron Frenzy takes the stage without losing anything this time(Win tickets below). These guys broke up in 2003 only to reunite ten years later. I have yet to see them since they reunited so I’m really looking forward to this one.
