Failure Orlando Giveaway

TICKET GIVEAWAY: Failure, Hum, and Torche | The Most Anticipated Reunion Show of the Year (At Least for Some of Us) | House of Blues Orlando, Fl | October 11, 2015

by • October 6, 2015

This upcoming Sunday, October 11th, House of Blues Orlando is hosting one of the most 90’s anthemic concerts of not only this year, but maybe even this decade.  Here is the mind-blowingly-absurd lineup:

Yes, Failure is headlining.  If you’re not already decades-steeped in their book of business, their album Fantastic Planet is a staple for anybody who was a teenager when it debuted in 1996.  Here’s the song that got me (and a lot of others) hooked when I was 18:

These guys broke up in 1997, and proceeded to bum out dudes and chicks everywhere across lower-to-middle class America.  They’ve been touring again together since last year and are sure to receive an uproarious welcome here in Central Florida.

Now, to be fair, Hum is my 5th favorite band of all time.  I’ve been listening to them since their major-label debut with RCA in 1995.  At the juvenile age of 16, they completely changed my interests in modern rock.  Arguably the founders of shoegaze (or at least, the first that had any relevant mainstream success with it), their guitar tones drown you in a whitewater of over-saturated distortion that while harsh, is illogically peaceful.  Matt Talbott’s slightly flat and soothing vocal approach combined with Bryan St. Pere’s uniquely dynamic drumming absolutely blew my mind. “Stars” was the first song I heard (on the radio, no less) and it came on while I was doing homework one night, roughly around 9:00ish.  Check this out:

As soon as I heard the first rung-out distorted chord, I instantly loved it.  I was mesmerized.  Had to completely stop doing homework and just reflect on it for about ten minutes.  Now back then, you couldn’t hop online and look up a band and learn about them and immediately listen to their entire catalogue.  Learning anything about them at all took extensive effort and frequently only occurred from word of mouth.  The day after I heard them, I basically told my entire high school about hearing Stars.

Since their (personally emotionally devastating) breakup in 2000, I felt I was doomed to never have the chance to see them live.  Although they’ve played a small number of shows in recent years, they haven’t done any full-blown touring or played too many shows at all outside of Illinois and Austin, Texas.  For them to be touring and playing in Orlando is for me, a show I’ve been waiting a lifetime to experience.  No big deal.

Torche, admittedly from the 2000s to present, may not be a band from the ’90s but their bone-crushingly heavy riffs and doom vibe are more than welcome.  This band is no joke.  Great if you’re in the mood to hear something heavy, but that isn’t metal.  They will be an incredible foundation for this bill.  Here’s my favorite song off this year’s release, Restarter:
