Each song in Drive-By Truckers’ twenty-year catalog deserves its own essay. They are compelling stories told over incredibly played rock n’ roll that get to the heart of the “duality of the Southern thing.” Poetry that takes on a different dimension when played live. Their show is a sure thing and puts brilliant songwriting on full display.
Case in point, Mike Cooley’s masterpiece, “Uncle Frank.” The most appropriately surnamed badass on the planet sets the stage clearly during the first two stanzas. Our hero — an illiterate veteran for whom Cooley builds intense sympathy — does not show up until the third. Where is he going with this?
Uncle Frank bought a piece of land he figured no one would want. Progress, in the form of a hydroelectric plant, floods it and the land around becomes prime real estate. Frank is left with no marketable skills and no place to go.
It’s a story that feels all too familiar in today’s recession age; and Cooley draws you deep into a web of empathy. What’s Frank gonna do? Is he about to go on a shooting spree? Will he give up and move to the city? Does he take a more romantic path and busk for morsels in Birmingham?
Clashing guitars played with virtuoso skill bookend the last stanza, framing a reveal that would give goosebumps to the corpse of Donald Trump.
Uncle Frank couldn’t read or write
So there was no note or letter found where he died
Just a rope around his neck
and the kitchen table turned on its siiiide.
