Let’s do this one from memory.

Under The Table and Dreaming was unlike any music I’d heard when I stumbled across it (around the same time Rusted Root hit me right in the gills). And DMB was so easy to like. I took to all they were doing fairly immediately. I played “What Would You Say” and “Jimi Thing” and everything else as loudly as my bad speakers allowed. Songs ended up accidentally memorized.

Add the bit about the band encouraging fans to tape shows for their own use in its earliest days and you end up liking them more than you might have before. It helps solidify things. If they’re going to be the new Grateful Dead—or at least inspire droves into following them around for big chunks of their lives—so be it.

Dave Matthews doesn’t make me foam at the mouth; I’m no rabid fan. But I’ve a younger brother who has bled for Dave Matthews. I mean that literally. The only ink he has etched into his skin is directly related to the band. Call it what you wish, but tattooing a band’s album covers onto your body takes a certain kind of dedication. It’s way beyond saving your concert tickets in a shoebox.

So let’s turn back time a bit. Let’s rediscover songs we still love. Let’s join the party over in Tampa. Dave Matthews will be at the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre on July 29 (Win tickets below). Let’s go already. There is so much barefoot lawn dancing in our future.
