And I’m not talking about playing with The Black Crowes (who officially called it quits in 2015), I mean with his band of brothers in the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Last year, Chris and his family moved to Marin County in Northern California on the side of Mt. Tamalpais overlooking Stinson Beach. The natural and beautiful surroundings were so fascinating and inspiring that he called up his Brotherhood — guitarist Neal Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and drummer Tony Leone — to get together to record their next album.  The album, Anyway You Love, We Know How You Feel (due out July 29) mixes psychedelic vibes with rootsy rock, from amplified mind journeys to softer relaxing tunes, and even includes a hint of religious words and imagery. One of the new songs, “California Hymn,” sounds like a Southern honky tonk gospel choir. Whatever kind of guitar the magician may be wielding, whether acoustic, electric, or pedal-steel, expect a transcendental experience and one hell of a show.

I’ve been fortunate enough to catch two Chris Robinson shows recently, although these were special “revue” shows. The first was at Bear Creek Music & Art Festival 2014 at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida.  Dubbed Chris Robinson’s Soulive Revue, Robinson joined forces with Soulive and many guests including George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Bernard Purdie, Oteil Burbridge, Roosevelt Collier, Alecia Chakour, Pee Wee Ellis and the Lettuce horns. Some of the songs delivered during the classic covers set included “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “Sugaree” by the Grateful Dead), “Hot Stuff” and “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones, “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)” and “Hard to Handle” by Otis Redding, and “Space Captain” (Joe Cocker). The second time I witnessed this musical magic was at the inaugural Fool’s Paradise 2016 in St. Augustine, Florida.  This would be the first ever Chris Robinson Soul Revue, featuring an all-star lineup with George Porter Jr. (The Meters) on bass, Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk) on drums, Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk) on keys, Eric Krasno (Lettuce/Soulive) on guitar, Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) on guitar, and The Shady Horns (Ryan Zoidis & Eric Bloom) on sax and trumpet, plus special guest Cory Henry (Snarky Puppy) on keys.  Covers of Allen Toussaint, Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, and many other classics made this first time event something special.
