My inner high school fan-girl came out when Cartel announced the “Chroma 10 Year Anniversary Tour.” I’ve been a long time Cartel fan, and it’s been a long ass time since I last saw them, so this tour announcement made me real happy. And, to top that, Hit the Lights, being one of the openers, really was the cherry on top. I haven’t seen them in forever, either. Nostalgia much?
Seeing and hearing Chroma live in its entirety was magical. It was pure nostalgia. It brought me back to senior year of high school and my freshman year of college. All I think of is rocking out with my car windows down or being in my dorm room with the stereo on max volume while my roommates were in class or gone for the weekend. I’ve seen Cartel live a handful of times before. The only show I remember vividly is when they played the Nokia Theatre (now Best Buy Theatre) in Times Square back in 2007. Cobra Starship, Boys Like Girls, and Permanent Me were billed as well. That show was about Cobra and Cartel. Seeing Cartel play again was like a breath of fresh air. After a long two weeks leading up to the show, it was awesome to be brought back to a happier time. “Luckie St.” is my favorite track. When they played that, I went hard.
Lead vocalist Will Pugh, and the band, had the crowd in the palm of their hands. It was simply AWESOME! Will didn’t even have to sing. The guys really just had to play, and the crowd would’ve sung the whole album. That’s how involved the crowd and myself were.
The encore consisted of their later releases; “The Fortunate,” “This Is Who We Are,” and “The Perfect Mistake.” I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My voice was pretty horse afterwards and didn’t want the set to end.
