The Beatles crafted their legendary masterpiece Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as a response to the Beach Boys’ own genius work, Pet Sounds. The latter is influential enough to have been named the second greatest record in rock n’ roll history by Rolling Stone. The former sits atop the list.
Lead songwriter Brian Wilson largely retreated from publicly making music after he gifted the world Pet Sounds. The follow-up, his equally brilliant Smile, would not be released until 2004. Wilson and company would spend a year working on the record in 1967, but Wilson’s battles with mental health and creative differences prevented the album from being finished.
Meanwhile, Wilson largely disappeared from the public eye and was preyed upon by psychologist/manager Eugene Landy, leading to a whole host of emotional complications. Thankfully, Wilson is enjoying a bit of a renaissance these days, stepping back into the spotlight to play beloved classics.

Pet Sounds is a perfectly rendered filet draped in clarified butter and complemented by a nice Merlot and blanched asparagus — all the complexity a connoisseur craves with a quality instantly recognizable by any who consume it. Fortunately for us, Brian Wilson is bringing one of popular music’s greatest creations to the incredible St. Augustine Amphitheatre on September 10, 2016.
We recommend camping at gorgeous Anastasia State Park and walking over to the venue. Campsites are still available, but the opportunities will go fast. One of rock n’ roll’s greatest composers is playing one of its greatest albums in one of the most beautiful corners of paradise.
