There are not many progressive metal bands in the world as successful and as well known as Between the Buried and Me. Boasting 6 albums, an EP, a cover album, and a live DVD, these guys from Raleigh, North Carolina, have made a name for themselves, even bigger than the actual band name! With influences that range from Metallica, King Crimson, Queen, Pink Floyd, Pantera, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Motley Crue, and a sound that can go from progressive metal to death metal to metalcore all in the same song, you have the makings of one of the most diverse and interesting bands in the business.

Formed after the dissolution of metalcore band Prayer for Cleansing, Tommy Rogers and Paul Waggoner decided to keep on playing, and after a few years of going through band members, finally formed a solid lineup with Dustie Waring, Blake Richardson, and Dan Briggs in 2005. In that time, they released two albums, an eponymous effort, and The Silent Circus, before finally breaking out with the hit record, Alaska, in 2005.

They followed this up with another smash, Colors, in 2007, probably my favorite album. After this, they released an album almost every two years. The Great Misdirect, The Parallax II: Future Sequence, and soon to be released, Coma Ecliptic. These guys have all the makings of being one of the longest running and successful metal bands, and hopefully they stay the course, because the genre would be much worse off without them (Check out the video for “The Coma Machine” from Coma Ecliptic below).

Between The Buried and Me will be performing in Orlando, FL on Thursday, July 9 at Venue 578 (win tickets below). Opening support from Animals As Leaders, heavy-hitting, instrumental progressive metal from Washington D.C., and The Contortionist, from Indianapolis, IN.
