American Authors Live Review & Concert Photos | Universal Studios Orlando | March 15, 2015

Parties, drinking, parades, music, laughter, festivities … Mardi Gras at Universal Studios Orlando stretches out over multiple months. Every weekend during Mardi Gras, a popular or up and coming artist takes the stage to perform a full concert for those in attendance at the park. This weekend, the artist performing was none other than American Authors, a group that is very personal to me.

I am fortunate enough to have shot American Authors on two separate occasions (thanks to the great friends of mine over at Oh Honey). Oh Honey is a band growing more popular by the minute with their eclectic sound that’s sure to bring a smile to your face. I have been fortunate enough to work with Oh Honey (Check out their music at www.Ohhoneymusic.com) and spend some time getting to know them as a group. Through Oh Honey, I got the chance to photograph American Authors in the past. So, I knew I had to head to Universal and shoot this concert–one that would satisfy.

Before the show, I enjoyed the theme park under the beautiful Florida weather. When I was walking around, I had a brief chance encounter with Zak, the lead singer of American Authors, who was being given a tour around the new “Diagon Alley” area. We exchanged a brief catch-up moment before he headed out to get ready to perform for the evening. I headed out to catch a few more rides before the show.

The parade passed by and American Authors quickly took to the stage, starting with the drummer and some bright crowd-blinding lights. This drum entrance was similar to the one seen on the Honda Civic Tour. The rest of the band individually joining Matt (drums) on stage. The crowd was then treated to almost an hour of a wide range of songs at all paces.

One of the biggest highlights of the show came within the first 15 minutes when the song “Believer” was played. The show was continually amped up with other original songs such as “Hit it,” and the most popular song that brought American Authors to the forefront of fame, ”Best Day Of My Life.”

There was also a moment of acoustically pleasing “cover song” time where the band performed “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith–a song that boosted Sam Smith to mainstream popularity and landed him having to pay a “co-writer royalty” to Tom Petty for it’s similarities to the song “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty.

As the concert came to a close it was obvious that every member of this small four piece band is there because they love to make music. They love sharing music with the crowd and they are still very appreciative of the fame they have come to know. It is evident they are doing what they love. As they constantly thanked their fans after every song performed, it was very obvious that the crowd was thankful for the performance they were giving. As was I. 🙂
