Afghan Whigs Concert Tickets Tampa 2022

Forming in 1986 in Cincinnati, Ohio, The Afghan Whigs are one of the longest running alternative rock bands still in the scene, having come up during the onset of the grunge era. Only the second non-Pacific Northwest band to be signed to Sub-Pop, The Afghan Whigs put out two albums and a covers EP with the label before jumping up to a bigger label in Elektra. They put out one album with the label before signing up with Columbia in 1998, claiming to have been burned and unsupported by the other label. Unfortunately, this was a short lived union, as TAW decided to go on hiatus in 2001. After a brief flirt with a reunion in 2006, they returned full time to being a band in 2011 and have been killing it since!

I’ve always been partial to the Afghan Whigs due to their great covers of other’s songs, especially their R&B and soul covers, as it was a nice way to listen to some of my favorite songs in a completely different genre, but their original material blows those covers out of the water. Their constant efforts to evolve their sound from a Replacements-esque garage band into the soul driven post punk sound of today is quite remarkable for a band that initially made their mark during the grunge period.
