TICKET GIVEAWAY: Kawehi | Coming to BackBooth Orlando | Friday, March 27 2015

Here’s what you need to know above all else: If you’re going to experience Kawehi at all, you’re going to want to do so live. Yes, she’s got a pretty good set of pipes on her and she even has some interesting sci-fi ideas when it comes to songwriting (see her Robot Heart album for starters). The thing is, you can’t just listen to Kawehi like you might listen to another singer. You have to see what it is she’s doing. The good thing? She creates her many-layered and many-looped songs right in front of her eager audiences, one song after the other. It’s like hearing the construction and seeing the behind-the-scenes before you’re gifted with the somehow flawless and polished end result.

I caught her in the middle of doing one of several very successful Kickstarter campaigns. (Well, I saw the video anyway.) She took a stab at Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” on what was apparently brand new equipment. With a glass of red nearby and half-emptied, she made the song her own. In one take. Kawehi is a one-woman orchestra, all buttons and keyboards and looped vocals. Sometimes she does so with dogs sleeping nearby, even. Still, it’s pretty much a thrill-ride. Try and prove me wrong.

Have I seen her live? Not yet. That’s about to change real soon. She’ll be at the BackBooth this Friday, March 27 (win tickets below). Sometimes Orlando gets pretty damn lucky.
