Here are a few fast facts you can keep at the back of your mind when dwelling on the band that is Shovels & Rope. Yes, they’re a fairly lovely blend of husband and wife—Michael Trent (guitar) and Cary Ann Hearst (ferocious drums) out of Charleston, South Carolina—and, yes, you could describe them to your friends as an “American folk duo” and probably get away with that. Even though, well, that description is about the most boring one you could use. Do they do traditional folk? Sure they do. But they also manage to weave in solid strands rock and roll, undiluted country and punk, too. This is why they draw a crowd. This is por qué people are attracted to them, smiling wide-eyed helpless bugs getting as close as they possibly can to the pretty blue bug lights. Get too close and their music’ll burn you, too … but you’ll have something to talk about the next day.
We’re not all that sure which of the two band members is Shovels and which counts as Rope (though we’ll bend your ears with our theories sometime). What we do know—another fact—is that they’ll be blowing your respective minds when you end up elbowing your way to the front of the stage on January 21st at The Social Orlando (win tickets below).
Last time we got to see them around these parts, Shakey Graves was on their bill (and if you don’t know that one-man-band tour de force, go bone up on his stuff, too) and they delighted all there with loud drums, beautifully blended vocals and a hell of a lot of stomping. It was a great enough show that we’re glad we get them back for a second time, with a brand new album to draw from, even. Just make sure you show up on time: Caroline Rose is opening. Her twang sounds real good in our ears.
