My palms are already sweating at the thought. When did courage get so hard to come by? The mere idea of approaching a possible suitor these days makes my throat lukewarm with yesterday’s cafeteria leftovers. Nostalgia ridden afternoons creep in as I pass a soccer field or the sale rack of awful glitter mini dresses at Macy’s, playing memories of eager Homecoming anticipation marked by waiting, always waiting.

I was a straight up sucker for the ask. Wanted the grand gesture. Give me the classic car paint on the window which read, “Will u go 2 HC w/ me?????” Give me the pizza at the front door spelling out your love in pepperoni’s (make that M&M’s). Write across the sky in big, cumulus letters confessing your aerial crush for me so the little ants below know you want to get to second base with me!

Mama didn’t raise no fool. But she did raise a shy one with major anxiety and overactive pituitary glands. Asking was not in my wheelhouse. I was bound by social construct and baggy sweats.

The Sadie Hawkins Dance is an event curated around the theme of “asking first” and the importance of consent, featuring rad ladies at the forefront. The evening will begin with Orlando’s quiet powerhouse Zoya Zafar, whose delicate dance of soft vocals and poignant words burn slowly over minor chords. Her ability to entrance a room is done not by begging you to watch but rather, making you feel like maybe she was never there at all…. the ghost of your beautiful ex-girlfriend.

SugarPlum can be seen with an icecream cone in tow in her musical pairing for the sweet single, “All The Time,” a sweet tooth you’re sure to catch, as well. Her girl-next-door vibes are made bad-ass by the candor in her straight and soothing delivery. “MAYBE BABY” plays on creeping synth and tripping honey vocals.

RV is going to bring some good ol’ rock’n’roll to the mix! Comprised of Justin Burns (Vocals / Rhythm Guitar), Sean Labree (Lead Guitar), Nathan Munizzi (Drums), Camden Pink (Bass), the quartet are fuzzed out perfection. RV is the soundtrack of getting back on the dance floor after being spurned by your crush. Their sound fuels a rush of confidence to the center of the gym. Inhibition sheds fast. You’re heart is racing. Let them look. This is for you. RV is going to bring it.

Pathos, Pathos are back, baby. Closing out the night with their special tour de force of feelings and danceable tracks, these are the boys. The men to make ya move! Dig into their first EP, Familiar Homes, for a solid back catalog of material. Their Summer 2016 release, Pet Names, only gilded the lily with sweet, uptempo melodies and heart-wrenching lyrics, once more. Pathos is the friend ribbing your side, calling you out and telling you to get your sorry ass on the dance floor and awkwardly talk to your crush.

 

Accompanying the music is the usual drawl of a Friday spent at Will’s, throw in a photo spot set up w/ fun props, $5 (special) Love Punch, and unique merchandise w/ all benefits to Planned Parenthood, and you’ve got a night to remember. We will also have a bucket out for donations to PP!
