I go to reach for the vinyl once a week, at least. It’s never there, but wishful thinking leads to hopeful hands which, ultimately leads to disappointment.
Last time The Districts were in town this past June, I neglected to buy their record and have been etching the days with teeth-soldered nails into my wall.
2 more days.
The Litiz, PA boys are back at The Social this Wednesday, and if their first Florida show was any indication, this one will surely be even more packed. Popular Manipulations hadn’t come out yet when they came through Orlando though, they played many tracks from the album, (out on Fat Possum Records late Summer 2017).
Both of their previous works, Telephone and A Flourish and a Spoil, swim against the current of regulation of what we’ve come to know as Indie Rock. Popular Manipulations expounds upon this wave and crashes into you hard. Rich choruses and thick texture meet an apparition-like intro on possibly the most anthemic track off the album, “Ordinary Day.”
If you’ve ever ridden a bike, or fallen in love, or scraped your knee, or bumped your head, or accidentally ran a stop sign, or got hit in the face with a ball and started crying even though it didn’t hurt that bad but couldn’t stop your big dumb face from crying, then “Ordinary Day” is for you. You’ll sing out in gross recognition,
An ordinary sunset
An ordinary day
An ordinary sunset
I’ll let you down again.”
I’ll wait…even if the line is long. My un-manicured hands will be on a record and my needle will be dull by Christmas Thanksgiving.
Sun Seeker will be the folky, slightly psychedelic wingman to prime us for The Districts. Self-described ‘Divorce Rock’ had me confused upon research, but honestly, it makes perfect sense. If I were somehow the amazing love child of Stevie and Lindsay, Biddeford is the album I would make. Equal parts sleepy longing and slow town country rock paint a world riddled with modern nostalgia.
