I was a junior in high school when The Ataris released their second album, Blue Skies, Broken HeartsâŠNext 12 Exits, and it couldnât have come at a better moment. After a period of dealing with countless rejections, I was introduced to a band that truly understood exactly what I was going through at the time. It was as if the lyrics were written specifically to help me realize that I wasn’t the only one going through these types of issues. It was comforting to know that some of my favorite rock stars were dealing with the same girl problems as me. This album’s overly personal lyrics are what secure its special place in my heart.
The first song on Blue Skies, Broken HeartsâŠNext 12 Exits that I immediately fell in love with is âYour Boyfriend Sucksâ (See video below). The lyrics of this song felt like the story of my life at that point:
âFinally got the nerve to tell you,
how much you mean to me,
you said that I was your best friend,
a real sweet guy,
thatâs all Iâll ever be.â
I cannot even tell you how many times I heard that exact excuse throughout my high school years.
There are so many great songs on this album but one of my all time faves is “San Dimas High School Football Rules” (See video below). The title is a reference to a line from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I heard this song for the first time while listening to the many punk rock compilation CDs I used to buy to discover new music. This song has one of my favorite opening lines of an emo song:
“Last night I had a dream,
that we went to Disneyland,
went on all the rides,
didn’t have to wait in line.”
The way The Ataris deliver their heartfelt lyrics with such passion is what sets them apart for from your average pop-punk band.
The Ataris will be playing Blue Skies, Broken Hearts…Next 12 Exits in its entirety, this Saturday at Backbooth (Win tickets below). Opening the show will be Biters, Brian Marquis and Another Close Call. Don’t miss your chance to hear this classic album from start to finish in an intimate venue.
