To hear Gang of Four’s guitarist (and last remaining original member), speak of his band, you’re hearing someone with his eyes set on the future. He doesn’t seem to mind the loss of their vocalist (Jon King). The fact they’re still recording and touring and even working to evolve their sound reflects in their continued momentum. Gang of Four plays at The Social on Oct. 27. Do yourself a favor—add your name to that party.

Still, when I think of Gang of Four, I’m not thinking of the future as much as I am the past. I found their song “To Hell With Poverty” one evening some years back, and it led to my becoming a fast fan. The song became my late night driving companion. I added it to as many playlists as I could when I had my own little radio show.

Gang of Four has influenced more than a fair share of bands that exist today. There are too many bands out there that sound like they’re imitating them to dispute that fact. Even Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) has told the Rolling Stone: 

“…there’s no one more influential on my guitar playing than Andy Gill.”

That sets the stage, doesn’t it? A comeback, a revival—take your pick. It means seeing them now may in fact be as good or better as seeing them then.
