Itâs âAlmost Here.â
Officially 10 years later, The Academy IsâŠÂ kicks off the anniversary of debut album, Almost Here, which catapulted the band into pop punk stardom.
Remember the glory days of Fueled By Ramen? Back when our alternative radio stations were dominated by My Chemical Romance, Cute is What We Aim For, Fall Out Boy, and Cobra Starship? Consider The Academy Is… the time machine that all of us mid-2000s pop punks have craved, and itâs with bated breath we await the possibility of a new album? (Please, even the slightest hint of Santi would do it for me).
Alright, alright, slow down. At least, thatâs what Iâm anxious to hear still heart-throb William Beckett belt out to the House of Blues crowd. Since the announcement post-Riot Fest, Iâve pumped myself up with TAI-TV antic videos of Adam T. Siska âSisky Businessâ and Andy Mrotek âThe Butcher.â Even the wide grin of Mike Carden is enough to get me pumped.
Every track of Almost Here commands your âAttention.â The album was the epitome, the peak of all things pop punk in this era, and still subtly underrated as a voice of a generation. Whether you were swooning over William Beckettâs gorgeous vocals in âThe Phrase That Paysâ or swung your hips to âBlack Mamba,â it was a style of music that was lyrically astounding and musically catchy.
I used to wake up early for high school (a la 6 a.m.) to catch their music videos on MTV. Many of us fans would camp out in the early hours before sold-out shows on their Santi tour or fawn over Mrotekâs tour art. It didnât matter if you were a new fan or a loyal follower; The Academy Is⊠always made you feel like your attendance was important to them. Thereâs room for both âSkeptics and True Believersâ among the TAI. It wasnât just a following or a fandom; in many ways, it was a family of fans.
In their years since parting, the band membersâ lives have changed. The boys had children. William Beckett launched a solo career that has blasted through the indie scene. Sisky tours with Carly Rae Jepsen (and is the only reason I remotely follow her career). Theyâve grown up, and so have we.
Seeing these men transformed, returning to their passion and love as this band, is going to be a magical experience. Better yet, Orlando kicks off their reunion tour across the country. Aside from the hometown shows in Chicago, itâs guaranteed that this stop may be the most electric. After all, this will be their first stage set since Riot Fest, the second of their reunion.
If there is ever a gorgeous moment in 2015 for pop punk, it will be the moment that the decade-defining act steps onto the House of Blues stage.
