Is it just us, or does the Hip Hop news cycle seem to have no let up and no come down in 2016? So far we’ve had beefs galore, reconciliations, protests, major albums, more beef and shocking performances. And we’re barely past Valentine’s Day! This week was no exception. Here are some stories that got our heads turning from the past few days.
CHARLAMAGNE DEBATES CONSERVATIVE HOST
Conservative web news host Tomi Lahren was one of many voices to dismiss Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance and race-baiting and sensational. This earned her “Donkey of the Day” status from MTV and Breakfast Club Morning Show Host Charlamagne tha God. The rest, as they say, is viral video history. Have a look at the fiery debate between the two below.
NEW J. DILLA ALBUM COMINGÂ
Reports are that this will be the final batch of unreleased material that Dilla recorded while he was still alive. Titled The Diary, the album was originally to be released in 2002. It will be released on Nas’ Mass Appeal label and will feature artists including Pete Rock, Madlib, and, Kareem Riggins and Detroit emcees Frank N Dank.
KENDRICK LAMAR PERFORMANCE CONTENT STOLEN?
At the 58th Grammy Awards, Kendrick Lamar was clearly the man of the hour. More than just his five trophies, he left the crowd in shock and awe with his stunning stage performance. But rapper Dice Raw took to Twitter to let the world know that K. Dot may have ripped off his play inspired by mass incarceration called The Last Jimmy. Original content from Kendrick, or did he borrow a little too much? An interesting debate, to put it mildly.
KILLER MIKE WRITES OP ED FOR CNN
There’s more than enough to be concerned about in the world today. And Atlanta emcee and activist Killer Mike knows it well. He and Professor Erik Nielson of the University of Richmond recently penned an Op Ed piece on the concerns around a case that may go to the Supreme Court: Bell vs. Itawamba County School Board. Student and aspiring rapper Taylor Bell was suspended back in 2010 from his Greenville, Mississippi high school for posting a Hip Hop video calling out by name some male teachers who were accused of sexual misconduct by some female students. Read the full piece by Killer Mike and Nielson on the CNN website here. The song in question can be heard below.
JON CONNONR AND OTHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN “HIP HOP 4 FLINT” WORLDWIDE FUNDRAISER
Along with major Hip Hop names like P. Diddy, The Game and Meek Mill, Flint native and Aftermath artist Jon Connor is now lending more support to the Flint Water Crisis. He’ll be part of “Hip Hop 4 Flint”, a global event scheduled for March 19 in cities like New York, Detroit, Philadelphia and Orlando. Connor, a Flint native released the song “Fresh Water For Flint” last month and now confirms he will be part of the fundraiser in March. Good to see that this tragedy is still on people’s radar.
KANYE TALKS NEW MUSIC WITH DRAKE AND FUTURE
Without a doubt, it’s been the most anticipated and confusing album story of the year. Now that Kanye’s The Life of Pablo is here, he publicly thanked Drake for helping with two of the album tracks “30 Hours” and “Father Stretch My Hands”. He also promised that he has new music coming with both Drake and the games other current “It” rapper, Future. Maybe the groundhog was actually talking about Yeezy Season this year instead of spring!
