Take to the streets of the Grand Central District in St. Petersburg for the largest annual local band showcase. Donât Stop St. Pete arrives with only the most addictive acts from around Tampa Bay.
Indie to hardcore talents take over four stages, and only your auxiliary pallet can determine your course for the night. The scene in the area is booming with up-and-coming acts spread across a multitude of genres. To narrow down the long list, Iâll be sticking with some of my hometown sound heroes.
Redfeather is the psychedelic indie sound that reverberates through Tampa Bay bars and eclectic spaces. Expect a spiritual experience when you hear Mark Etherington (also known for Set and Setting and Mountain Holler) lift your soul with âFossils.â
Sonic Graffiti are the go-to for blues, funk, punk, and noise rock. The band is a wildcard performer, going from classic punk romp in âScribblesâ to scratchy alt-noise in âDead Cop Dub.â The three piece are a blast to watch live, and are among my top favorites of the festival.
Brother duo Ryan and Kade Ballogg form Chant the Trees, an acoustic-folk act known for harmonizing vocals and earthy tones. Their sound is a progressive, at times spiritual, experience that feels born of and for the most tranquil outdoor spaces.
Meet Poster, the pleasant-vibing indie punk act that is utterly contagious. Just try to stand still during âTrainspottingâ- itâs impossible to resist rolling, gorgeous energy emitted by the Tampa band. The act has been increasingly touring and building momentum even outside of the Bay area; experience this band before the explosion.
Tight Genes are the rhythmic garage rock ânâ rollers that will decimate Sly Bar. With heavy noise punk influence, itâs no wonder their momentum is building throughout Florida. The Orlando act is sure to rip with entrancing energy.
Snacking is the bleeding emo hearts soaked in punk rock persona. The local favorites for slow-jams bursting into rapid-licked energy are the example for how to build existential emotion within the sound itself. Experience the post-rock instrumentals and expect a thorough grasp of your essence the moment âI Donât Want To Live On This Planet Anymoreâ surges.
Permanent Makeup dances the line between avant rock and post punk. Creative and catchy, âSpace Race is Deadâ is the irresistible surfy jam that I hope the Tampa Bay stompers blast from their new album Taker. Iâll be head banging through every booming second of this set.
Goodnight Neverland is the ambient energy that sends washing waves of alt-indie washing over St. Petersburg. Their gorgeous vibes reach even local radio airwaves, asserting their presence as swoon-inducing soul-crooners. Youâll wish for it, but even Goodnight Neverland âCanât Stop Time,â but you may experience it for just the slightest moment in their live set.
Fictional Friends are the eccentric indie rock echoers of the lot. Alternating classic rock bounce and meditative rolling sensitivity, the band is as diverse as it is creative in sound. If the Black Keys could get any more indie and rocking, Fictional Friends would be the superior answer.
Need more psychedelic exposure? Veiny Hands offer the best dosage in âTonguing,â a simply catchy indie bumper. At times dark, the Donât Stop spotlight will illuminate this gorgeously glooming act and elevate higher in the local scene stage.
