I was newly a teenager when Illmatic came at the world. It was the early 90s. Hip hop was still pretty young. The early days of the genre were a mixed bag, some truly powerful moments coupled with heavy doses of Mother Goose. Nas released his debut at a time when grunge was king- before Tupac and B.I.G. were not yet household names, let alone legends.

Illmatic opened doors to questions about race, power, and sound. It was a game changer for fans of popular music and a sea change for folks listening to hip hop. Nas followed that brilliant effort with It Was Written, and in doing so entering a different echelon of notoriety and influence.
For almost two decades, Nas has managed to uphold an expert level of craftsmanship. His poetry continues to move hearts and bodies from the girl walking down the street in Brooklyn to the guy in the club in Fayetteville.
