Modest Mouse Live Review: Modest Mouse Brings Good News to St. Augustine Amphitheatre | July 17, 2015

Modest Mouse made a stop in St. Augustine, FL on Friday July 17, 2015, for their second FL date of 2015 (their first being at Gasparilla Music Festival), bringing an hour and 40 plus minutes of new, deep and energized jammy cuts from their vast catalog.

Being a frequent flyer of Modest Mouse shows, I can always count on a unique set, Friday being no different.

They opened with “World at Large” off of Good News for People Who Love Bad News and directly went into their lead single, “Lampshades On Fire,” off of their latest album, Strangers to Ourselves.

After some Brock mosquito complaints/jokes, they quickly knocked out another new cut off of Strangers, “Wicked Campaign,” then got everyone moving on their classic hit, “Dashboard.” Brock then went on to rant about something else in between songs, however, it was difficult to understand what was he was saying (he may have been drinking).

Modest Mouse have an insane amount of players in their band. Their violin player and the second drummer might just catch you for a surprise if you haven’t seem them for a few years. Regardless, they all sounded very tight throughout their 19 song set.

It’s also worth noting the amount of people dancing at this show. They’ve slowly built their cult following into a mainstream legion of people that surprisingly all had the common goal of getting down, which we did!

Dropping “King Rat,” “This Devil’s Workday,” then “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes,” once again proved their ability to show off any song in their catalog whenever they feel like it. People there may not have realized it, but they managed to play a third of their newest album, Strangers to Ourselves, only further confirming their nonchalant set mixing abilities.

Depending the type of fan you are of Modest Mouse, one could say the set was a little light on some of their major hits. Of course they played “Float On” and the aforementioned “Dashboard,” however, they left out cuts such as “Ocean Breathe Salty,” “Fire it Up,” and “Dramamine.” I can tell you one thing … I was not complaining!

The band finished strong, dishing out a three song encore (“Shit in Your Cut,” “Fly Trapped in a Jar,” and “3rd Planet”), before leading the crowd through a sing-along during “The Good Times are Killing Me” off of Good News for People Who Love Bad News, for a proper conclusion to the evening.

St. Augustine Amphitheater is a great place to see a show and definitely worth the hour and a half drive from Orlando for a band that you love. Take out the nightmare traffic that you would hit going to Tampa and it’s a major score!

I’ve seen Modest Mouse many times and they’re always worth the drive. They’re just getting started on this latest tour through the states, so there’s opportunities out there to see them … get on it!
