If there’s a performance I’m craving this summer, it’s Melt-Banana. Hailing from Japan, the globally acclaimed noise rockers bring the ultimate show blend: experimental, pop, and highly unusual guitar riffs.

Yasuko Onuki and Ichirou Agata have spearheaded this genre-defying act since 1992, and have rotated a variety of musicians as they’ve shaped a solid sound and reputation. More than 11 albums and 23 EPs have been released by the band, much to the satisfaction of a global fanbase.

Your grandparents would grumble that it’s just a mishmash of noise but every sound selection in Melt-Banana’s music is precise–you’re listening for the wailing siren chords, the impossibly fast drums, and other creative elements that require a second or third listen to comprehend the full dimension of the song.

In case you’re wondering why I’m struggling to describe their music, just give a listen to “Candy Gun,” one of the top tracks released in their decades-long career. Just wait for it 😉

See what I mean? It’s rapid-fire guitar licks, pitched lyricism, techno sci-fi-vibe-y spits, and even the aggression of a hardcore punk outfit. It’s easy to envision yourself thrashing, head banging, twerking, or whatever jerky movement your body feels compelled to do. Just listening to Onuki belt out rapid-fire chants makes me want to attempt to follow along, even if I’m tongue-tied trying.
