A person comes to grips with life alone after thirty-nine years of marriage. The loss of a partner, a best friend, someone with whom you struggled and celebrated the good and the not-so-good alike. It is not a Hollywood love story. The reality of life’s ebbs and flows are fully exposed.

BJ Barham sits alone with a guitar pouring out the emotional “Unfortunate Kind” from his debut solo record Rockingham. His American Aquarium bandmates have taken a break leaving Barham to treat us with a gorgeous taste of what is to come. The song, along with the previously released title track, is comfort food with dash of heat. Grandma’s fried chicken dipped in sriracha and drizzled with honey- sweet and soothing but spicy.

Barham recently wrote a batch of songs that did not quite make sense for an American Aquarium album. Deeply personal tunes, not necessarily about his life, but inspired by the characters who have shaped the North Carolina-bred songwriter. American Aquarium was touring Europe at the time inspiration struck. Barham’s pen hemorrhaged lyrics about life in his hometown of Reidsville.

Orlando’s Mills 50 District will be treated to a rare opportunity. Barham, playing his gorgeous new songs in the intimacy of Will’s. The wonderful Justin Osborne (Susto) joins him in support. Don’t miss this chance to see one of America’s best songwriters at the top of his game.
