December 6, 2006- The adorable girl behind the bar wears a Cub Scout uniform that has been repurposed into a dress. She looks like she stepped out of a time machine that made short stops in each decade from the 1950s to this moment. She is the owner of a vintage shop by day. In keeping with her impossibly cool time-travelling ways, the store is called Sick Boy, like the Social Distortion song and the character in Trainspotting. Like most of the room, she looks impossibly cool.
Case in point, sitting at the opposite end of the tiny, dark space is Ben Nichols and Brian Venable — Lucero’s founders. They of the rugged good looks and sizable beard respectively. Each wears their bad tattoos in such a way, paying thirteen dollars to get one of your own seems like a brilliant idea. I approach the two of them with my brand new point-and-shoot digital Casio camera. Whatever self consciousness existed about asking a rockstar for a picture dissolves on impact of Nichols’s gravelly voice jumping at the opportunity to be immortalized on my computer later. 🙂
Lucero takes the stage, opening with “Chain Link Fence,” the kind of seminal tune from an early album that everyone is waiting to hear. A song most bands save for an encore so that no one leaves early, and all walk away satisfied they heard their song. With no such hangups, Ben and the boys worked without much of a setlist at all, taking slurred requests, refusing to sit out a single song, and whipping a room full of people dressed like time-travellers into madness of the finest kind.
The next day, we headed to Sick Boy. For an investment of eleven dollars I walked out with a gray pearl-snap shirt featuring pencil-thin pink lines, and a University of Florida v-neck ringer tee circa 1982. Cub Scout Dress was there wearing something else seemingly only she could pull off. Everyone in the store was smiling that day-after-the-show grin.
Almost a decade after that Tallahassee show, the memory remains crystal clear. So is the time Lucero played Orlando Calling, and in the alley behind Finnhenry’s. Plenty has changed — the band has added horns, lyrics have matured a bit — but one thing remains remarkably consistent. A Lucero show is always a textured and raucous story.
