NIKKI GLASER LIVE REVIEW

The Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater is a gorgeous venue that sits right on the Tampa Bay in downtown St Pete right next to the Dali Museum. As I got to the venue around 9pm, an earlier performance was letting out. The smell of rain was in the air. Huge bolts of lightning were lighting the sky when I went to Will Call to pick up my photo pass. It was a perfect Friday the 13th for comedy.

You may know her as the undeniable standout on Netflix’s The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady. You may also know her as the host of HBO Max’s reality dating show FBoy Island and Lover & Liars on the CW, the Emmy-nominated HBO comedy special, “Someday You’ll Die,”; the first female solo host of the Golden Globes, and The Nikki Glaser Podcast.

Nikki Glaser finally brought her “Alive and Unwell Tour” to St Petersburg for four sold-out shows at the Mahaffey Theater. She also brought this tour to Orlando, West Palm Beach, St Augustine, and Clearwater. Glaser has been taking this two-hour show across the United States since May 2024.

Opening the show was a set by comedian and writer for HULU’s Solar Opposites, Sean O’Connor. He ended his quick set with a high school story about posting naughty photos of himself and his 15-year-old male friends online, which accidentally ended up on a child porn website.

Following O’Connor was fan favorite Kill Tony regular, Fiona Cauley. The wheelchair-bound up-and-comer’s whole set was mostly low hanging fruit about herself having Friedreich’s Ataxia. Her story about convincing TSA they performed a miracle while praying over her legs was hilarious though.

Unfortunately, we weren’t approved to shoot the opening acts. It’s surprising that Nikki approved our request to take photos as most comedians don’t allow photographers. There have been photographers in the past who have filmed video and leaked the footage online. That doesn’t help put butts in seats when they might be trying new material for their next TV special. Especially when you’ve been taking this show on the road for 58 weeks with another scheduled 16 weeks of dates.

It’s always amazing catching an act in their prime. Alive and Unwell left fans wanting more as they were eating out of Glaser’s hands the entire night. Nailing punchline after punchline – you can tell this show is ready to be filmed as her next TV special.
