ZONKEY: Umphrey’s McGee Release New Mashup Album

by • November 11, 2016

Umphrey’s McGee has performed original mashups live for nearly a decade now, and it was only a matter of time these pioneering potions of musical magic would find their way onto a studio album. That time is officially today as UM has released the ZONKEY album, chock-full with 12 unique and uncanny mashups. Bits and pieces of classic songs are scrapped from decades of popular music from ‘70s Reggae to ‘80s Pop to ‘90s Metal and everywhere in between.

Do you like Beck and Radiohead?

Not all of the tracks are mashups of non-UM songs. For example, they sneak in their “Triple Wide” riff in the “Electric Avenue to Hell” track, and mash their own “Hajimemashite” with “Bitter Sweet Symphony.”

Just peep the track listing….

“National Loser Anthem”
“National Anthem” (Radiohead) + “Loser” (Beck) + “In The Air Tonight” (Phil Collins)

“Life During Exodus”
“Life During Wartime” (Talking Heads) + “Exodus” (Bob Marley) + “City of Tiny Lites” (Frank Zappa) + “25 or 6 to 4” (Chicago)

“Can’t Rock My Dream Face”
“Rock With You” (Michael Jackson) + “Can’t Feel My Face” (The Weeknd) + “Dreams” (Fleetwood Mac)

“Sad Clint Eastwood”
“Sad But True” (Metallica) + “Clint Eastwood” (Gorillaz)

“Electric Avenue To Hell”
“Highway To Hell” (AC/DC) + “Electric Avenue” (Eddy Grant) + “The Triple Wide” (Umphrey’s McGee)

“Ace Of Long Nights”
“Ace of Spades” (Motörhead) + “It’s Gonna Be a Long Night” (Ween)

“Sweet Sunglasses”
“Sweet Dreams” (Eurythmics) + “Sunglasses at Night” (Corey Hart) + “Electric Feel” (MGMT)

“Strangletage”
“Stranglehold” (Ted Nugent) + “Sabotage” (Beastie Boys)

“Come As Your Kids”
“Kids” (MGMT) + “Come As You Are” (Nirvana) + “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” (Dead or Alive)

“Frankie Zombie”
“Thunder Kiss ’65” (White Zombie) + “Relax” (Frankie Goes to Hollywood) + “Have a Cigar” (Pink Floyd)

“Bulls On The Bus”
“Bulls On Parade” (Rage Against the Machine) + “Mark On the Bus” (Beastie Boys)

“Bittersweet Haj”
“Hajimemashite” (Umphrey’s McGee) + “Bitter Sweet Symphony” (The Verve)

One of the most notable things to take away from this album comes from the “Sad Clint Eastwood” track which features a mashup of “Sad But True” (Metallica) + “Clint Eastwood” (Gorillaz). This studio track marks the world debut of bassist Ryan Stasik on lead vocals for the”Clint Eastwood” parts. Frontman singer/guitarist Brendan Bayliss says “We raised the key of the Metallica song out of sheer laziness, so we wouldn’t have to detune every time we played it, and luckily for Stasik it fit his vocal range perfectly.” Percussionist Andy Farag adds, “Stasik only sings with a British accent so this was right in his wheelhouse.” The “Sad But True” vocals come from the harding working man in the biz, drummer Kris Meyers, and it’s really mind-blowing how much he sounds like James Hetfield.

Keyboardist Joel Cummins notes “ZONKEY clearly pays homage to some of our favorite artists and songs. While we’ve tried to reproduce the spirit of the original compositions and recordings, we’ve also tried to have some fun with the structure as we’ve often combined seemingly dissimilar musical elements to create a new vibe altogether.”
