Vance Joy and Blind Pilot Live Review & Concert Photos | “Ain’t That a Groove” | House of Blues Orlando | March 15, 2016

In the world of writing, it’s said we’re only to write about those things we know well. As that mantra goes, “write what you know.” I suppose that bleeds over a little bit into the wide crevasses of music some. We’re these big walking magnets, so apt to get attracted to the stuff we feel like we know; whether it’s the stories being told onstage or the personalities attached to them, we clamber towards that steady sense of the blessedly familiar. Once a song or band sticks, for whatever reason, it really sticks. We end up feeling lucky. We don’t try to figure things out or shake it loose on account of loving the sensation too much.

When Blind Pilot made its way to House of Blues last Tuesday, they weren’t the only ones on the bill. They’re not even the ones that assured every last ticket was sold (I blame you, Vance Joy). But those Pacific Northwest sorts were the ones who felt most like my friends once I arrived. There was no new album to promote. It’s been five years since their excellent We Are The Tide. So they were a second opening act, content to showcase old songs and old albums. For a crowd expecting more Vance than Pilot, perhaps they were hearing this good stuff, this really really consistently good stuff, for the very first time. And guess what? The throngs of girls pressed up against the barriers were okay with it, to the tune of playing the part of Hushed Crowd and Woohooing Crowd at the exact times they should have hushed and woohooed. I think a good lot of brand new fans were born that night.

Not so long ago, I took it upon myself to see Blind Pilot over the course of three nights in three different Florida cities. The sorts that make up this band of musical merrymakers offers me an overwhelming sense of comfort. They’re my big cozy blanket on some kind of impossibly chilled-to-the-bones night. They never fail to deliver. If it’s an old song, new song or even a Gillian Welch cover, I’ll gobble up each and ask for replays. If they’re as thrilled about their real day-to-day lives as they are to perform (all smiles and closed eyes), we all could stand to learn a thing or two from them. What they’ve happened upon is magic and, lucky for us, they want to share it with the lot of us.

It makes a world of sense that Vance Joy is siding with a band that has such a solid discography and inventive sound as Blind Pilot does, especially when he’s so fresh out of the gate with just a solitary hit album to his name. He owns up to a voice that is easy to listen to and an acoustic playing style that keeps things on the quiet side. It’s good enough for repeats on the radio and it’s so utterly non-offensive, teenagers were there with their moms and occasional dads. Every time he hit his falsetto, they screamed loud enough to shake the rafters.

Vance and Blind Pilot will have their wagons hitched over the next several dates, right up into May. Perhaps he’s apt to learn some new tricks from a band that’s been as solid as they have been for the entire duration of their career. Wouldn’t that be just perfect? As far as hopes go, it’s not too big a one to hope for.
