Umphrey’s McGee night two in Atlanta (check out Friday Night 1). My heart beats fast just thinking of the hot and heavy jams in the majestic Tabernacle in beautiful downtown Atlanta. The crowd was ready for night two and showed their enthusiasm by donating a bra to the band’s already extensive collection. Fans weren’t disappointed when Umphrey’s came out and got things rolling with “North Route” (debuted here two years ago on the NYE run) into an elongated and rebirthing rendition “Similar Skin,” setting the mood for what was to be a spectacular night. Surrounded by weird and loving people it was only appropriate that we received a warm “Wappy Sprayberry” into a unifying “Hajimemashite.” The crowd started the song dancing to the quirky jam and ended arm-in-arm swaying with their friends. “Deeper” featured Jake giving Joel and hand on the keys, and then “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” rounded out an already wonderful first half.
Once again the Boys of Southbend come out of the break on a mission. “Plunger” > “Glory” > “Plunger” was exciting and beautiful, while being that dark heaviness my soul desires. This was followed by a “Triple Wide” dance party with a Chicago “25 or 6 or 4” tease. They also played fan favorites “Push the Pig” ( #HamFam ) and “Hurt Bird Bath” back to back on a fast paced highway leading to a rare cover of Tool’s “Forty-Six & 2” to go out with a bang. Rarely stopping in the second half, Umphrey’s finished the show off right with a “Puppet String” encore. Face… melted.
