Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson, known as Tove Lo (pronounced – “too-vah-loo”) is a Sweedish singer and songwriter known for her edgy take on pop music. Dubbed “the saddest girl in Sweden” the story behind her stage name is a little more sweet. “Tove Lo,” nicknamed by her grandmother, is based on her love for lynxes (singular: “lo” in Swedish), specifically a love for a lynx she once saw at the zoo, also named Tove.

Tove Lo’s music falls under the genre of electro, synth, and grunge-pop. Her style can be described as dark and melancholy, mostly due to the raw lyricism in her songs. Tove’s songwriting is a form of therapy for her where she writes her experiences and emotions across melodies and openly shares her vulnerability with the world. Her song’s subjects of love, sex, and failed relationships have gained relatability with her fans, which has made her the sensation that she is today.

She is known for famous songs such as her hit single “Habits (Stay High),” “Borderline,” and “How Long” – which was featured in HBO’s Euphoria. Her latest album release, Dirt Femme is her fifth studio album and debut as an independent artist under her new label, Pretty Swede Records. The album explores topics of femininity as she’s experienced being a woman in the music world. In an article with NME, she says that as an artist she felt the need to “enhance my masculine traits while getting ahead in this industry” in order to fit in with the male-dominated world of music. She states that what she once believed as femininity as a weakness has changed perspective over the years and now she sees it as strength that she embraces, and it shows.
