There’s this nagging voice inside my head telling me not to like The Pretty Reckless. I’m flat out choosing to ignore it.*

*(Maybe it’s because they opened up for Nickelback once upon a time?)

Still, will I be there to see The Pretty Reckless when they play House of Blues Orlando on Nov. 4? That’s a big yes.

There’s something about the voice carrying the rest of the band — that practiced, yet tired-growl lead singer Taylor Momsen owns up to — that forces you to grab hold and keep listening. It doesn’t matter if what they’re selling is not quite what you’re into. This is some pretty growly gospel that may lean on a grab bag of influences that includes, oh, Janis Joplin, Sheryl Crow, even Joan Jett to name a few.

It doesn’t even matter that this is slick, radio-ready rock that might even be erring on the side of trying too hard by delving into some stereotypes. In short, it’s good. It’s incredibly addictive. And please, may have I have another?

If the video of the band’s recent “Take Me Down” is any indication of their future direction, it seems they’re at least attempting to edge towards authenticity some more. For instance, there’s significantly less caked-on and perfectly smudged mascara this time around. Their new album drops on October 21.

Fun fact: Did you now that Taylor starred as Cindy Lou Who in Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas just a short 16 years ago? Kinda makes you want to go back and watch it all over again, doesn’t it?
