I waited. And I waited. AND I waited. This time last year, I was sitting on the semi-warmed up concrete of Atlanta next to strangers painted in shades of blacks and reds. Twenty One Pilots had descended upon the Georgia city and I braved the madness alone. I left the show with an abundant amount of friends and even warmer memories as the masses of bodies spilled back out of the Tabernacle. We all had high (delusional AF) hopes that we would get to meet the duo out by the buses. What was waiting instead, was just better.
The openers for Tyler and Josh, Finish Ticket, stood stoic among the madness of crowds rushing around and took pictures, signed posters, and took the time to say, “hey, what’s up!” They appeared un-phased by the chaos surrounding them; a feat that lesser bands would have floundered in. The dudes from California are an alt-rock indie five piece dream and got to bring their sound on the “Blurryface Tour” last year.
What a dream, indeed. “Color” has long stayed on Alt radio station’s playlists since it came out and that’s just the beginning of their sound. Brendan Hoye, lead singer, has a stage presence which begs you closer, beckons you into his space; a space which creates an array of spastic limb movements and entangled mic chords. This bubble is reserved for those willing to disregard walls built by outside forces and to tear down the walls built within ourselves that impede us from being completely uninhibited . Finish Ticket present a wonderful live show that is straight up fun.
Run River North. The name sends an immediate release of FOMO down my spine. I had friends in town. The hair dye from my newly bleached lavender hair had reached whatever part of my brain which was responsible for memory and tapped out my capacity to remember important events. I can make excuses all day, but the reality remains, I missed Run River North at The Social this past March and I’ve been kicking my plum little butt since. Friends in attendance said it was an unmatched live experience when it comes to vocals. The self-described indie sextet from LA are so pure. Finishing out this already stacked tour are the ever unique and awesomely weird, IRONTOM. The five-piece from LA have previously toured with Finish Ticket and were a most memorable performance of 2015 for me. Harry Hayes vocal stylings and onstage presence reeled me closer to the stage as he writhed around in his purple silk blouse, (a garment I complimented him on after the show, to which, he replied with the utmost enthusiasm and grace). IRONTOM has a sound that hits somewhere between soft indie lulls and hard smashing alt-rock plus, everywhere in between.
