For over 20 years Atmosphere, consisting of beat master Ant and lyricist Slug have been perpetual in the underground hip-hop scene. During this time they have currently released ten EPs and seven albums and ran their Rhymesayers Entertainment record label. Their most recent release, 2014’s Southsiders, added another dimension to their consistently stellar body of work. This album finds Atmosphere “trying to find a balance” between being forty year olds with families still making relative hip-hop albums while many of their contemporaries have dispersed.

Back in a red hot summer at the Central Florida fairgrounds in Orlando (2003), as a seventeen year old entering my senior year, I enjoyed my first Warped Tour. Although my views have changed on the insanely corporate “punk-rock summer camp,” seeing such acts like Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, NOFX, and Thrice for the first time made for a pleasant experience. Another first for me was seeing hip-hop live. Atmosphere, the lone hip hop act in a sea of punks was strange to fathom at first. However, touring for their 2002 release, God Loves Ugly, held their own and left a lasting impression on me. In the fall of that year they released Seven’s Travels, not just on their record label, but on Epitaph Records as well. A label that at that point had been a primarily punk label. Featuring bands the likes of Pennywise, Hot Water Music, and Bad Religion. Thus expanding their audience and introducing them to the wonderful world of underground hip-hop myself included. The Minnesota duo paved the way to discovery for other acts like Aesop Rock, El-P, and Doomtree.

What made Atmosphere so successful for over two decades is their ability to evolve. Ever since their 2008 release, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, they toured with a full band. No longer just utilizing turntables and a mic, leading to another dimension for the group. The deep meaning of Slug’s lyrics has lead to many labeling them as “Emo Rap.” I just think it is very relatable and personal.
