Third Eye Blind’s self-titled first album was released wayyyy back in 1997 and had five singles including: “Semi-Charmed Life,” “Graduate,” “How’s It Going to Be,” “Losing a Whole Year,” and “Jumper.” Flash forward to the present and the band is currently touring in support of their newest record, Dopaminereleased on June 16, 2015. The album is aptly named for the notion that playing music is the band’s greatest source of their pleasure. Urban Dictionary defines dopamine as “The kick ass chemical in your brain that makes you feel and do happy things … whatever they may be.” Check out this lyric video for the first single, “Exiles.”

This is their fifth album and in a 2012 HuffPost Live interview, Stephan Jenkins (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) said:

It’s going to be the last LP, in the sense of the standard practice of writing a bunch of songs, recording, setting up the album, all of those things. When I write a song, I want to post it, [send] out to the universe, and it’s done. I think my process now works better with the digital tools for uploading. I’m not going to worry about ways to monetize this; I’m going to go by the happiness quotient.”

What this means is that the door for Third Eye Blind is not completely closed, so fans breathe a small sigh of relief, but don’t hold your breath because it might be another six years if there’s ever another album.

Dopamine is the first release since 2009’s Ursa Major. Around the timeframe of Ursa Major’s release, the band spoke of an album that would contain unreleased songs recorded in the Ursa Major sessions. While the band spoke of releasing them in close succession to each other, Ursa Minor was never released.

This past Friday night (December 4), Third Eye Blind performed in St. Louis, Missouri as part of the Y98 Mistleto Show. The band was joined on stage by Fun singer Nate Ruess to perform Stone Temple Pilot’s “Interstate Love Song” in tribute to Scott Weiland, who passed away the night before. “Scott Weiland, rest in peace and thank you for a beautiful life,” Jenkins said after the performance. Check out the video below.
