The Zombies Review Orlando 2016

The Zombies Live Review, Photos & Video | The Plaza Live, Orlando, FL | February 24, 2016

The Zombies returned to Orlando on February 24, 2016 to once again play The Plaza Live, and unlike in 2014, this time my schedule allowed me to be in attendance. I had an extra ticket due to a cancellation so I called up a friend hours before the show to see if he wanted to come. I asked my friend what he was up to, and this is a true story, he said “I’m just hanging out at home, catching up on The Walking Dead on Netflix.” I paused for a minute to think of the irony that was happening. I replied “That’s cool. Speaking of, want to go see The Zombies at The Plaza?” We both had a good laugh at that one, it was too perfect of a set up. “Stop watching zombies and let’s go watch The Zombies!”

The Zombies are an English rock band, formed in 1961 in St. Albans (just outside of London) and led by Rod Argent (piano, organ and vocals) and Colin Blunstone (vocals). The group scored British and American hits in 1964 with “She’s Not There.” In the US two further singles, “Tell Her No” in 1965 and “Time of the Season” in 1969, were also successful. “Time of The Season” is frequently used in pop culture to represent the late 1960’s.

I ended up being fashionably late to the show and missed the opening band, Gringo Star. This quartet from Atlanta was formed in the late 2000’s and consists of a younger generation than that of the audience The Zombies appeal to. I think the average age was easily double that of mine, but it’s nice seeing anyone support live music at any age and I hope I’m right there with the rest of them in 30 years! I’m sure Gringo Star impressed the crowd with their modern take on the classic psychedelic pop rock of the 60’s.

It was a real treat to see The Zombies, albeit with only two of the original founding members, Rod Argent (piano, organ and vocals) and Colin Blunstone (vocals). I probably only knew a handful of their songs as they were never in heavy rotation within my music listening vehicles. I knew their big hits such as “Time of the Season”, “She’s Not There” and “Hold Your Head Up.” I was thoroughly impressed with the jams they did on “Time of the Season” and “Hold Your Head Up” where the organ and guitar solos easily doubled the standard record lengths.

Throughout the show, Colin would narrate the origin or tell a funny anecdote about the upcoming song. Before they played “Care of Cell 44” he said that Dave Grohl recently said on a Scandinavian television show that this was a song that changed his life.

The Zombies are breathing new life as they just released a new album Still Got That Hunger in October 2015 via The End Records/ADA. “It’s always been important to us to look forward, and not just get stuck in the past,” Rod Argent said of the new release, which is the fourth album of new studio material since keyboardist Argent and singer Colin Blunstone reunited in 2001. The new album marks another milestone for the beloved English combo and it harkens back to their vintage sound while also exploring fresh musical and lyrical territory with emotion-charged compositions.
