The Bright Light Social Hour + SWIMM | Live Review | March 3 2014 | The Social Orlando

by • March 25, 2014

Holy shit, if only I were on drugs! Psychedelics that is. SWIMM & The Bright Light Social Hour were a perfect fucking combo. “That was cool.” Seemed to be the most frequent comment of the night. Both bands presented some really heavy grooves and a lot of sweat. The Bright Light Social Hour has been around for years whereas SWIMM has only been in our ears for about a year.

SWIMM is a band from right down the street – Melbourne, FL. It’s always cool when a band’s parents come to a show. The lead singers parents were there. And the parental proudness was gleaming into the air. It was nice. It was sweet.

SWIMM are currently recording their first full length album. I think we’ll be hearing a lot about these dudes in the next year. They fucking kill it! There were lots of tempo changes, lots of heads moving, and some question marks above heads – you could tell some of the people in the room at the social had never heard of them before. But they all seemed pleasantly surprised. I fucking was.

Oh! Their drummer also plays harmonica! Can’t remember the last time I saw a drummer play harmonica. One of their jams reminded me of a badass up-and-coming band called KONGOS. Here’s a cool pic of SWIMM by Lindsay Tompkins:

SWIMM has a 4 song EP for fucking FREE available for download according to their facebook page. Check it out right here:

The Bright Light Social Hour was really fucking cool. Those dudes are masters of their instruments and make hot, steamy love to them on stage. It’s fucking epic! It’s really fucking epic. Their build ups, their breakdowns, their high pitched, trippy vocals… It was all just really sexual.

They put on a show. It’s not just a bunch of dudes gettin’ down. Well, it is. But it’s a lot more than that. It encapsules you. It mesmerizes you. Their live performance is one that’s comfortable to close your eyes to, put your head down and your hands up, and just fucking dance. You gotta check out their performance from SXSW in 2012 of “Bare Hands Bare Feet” and check out this badass pic by Lindsay Tompkins:

Hailing from Austin, Texas, The Bright Light Social Hour – god, that sounded so cliche. Fuck. It doesn’t matter where they’re from, they fucking rule and you need to go see them live. Check out the infectious song entitled “Back And Forth” by The Bright Light Social Hour below.

I saw one of my best friends at the Bright Light Social Hour show. One of my best friends that I haven’t spoken to in almost two months. We both said “Hello.” He said “Let’s catch up soon man, it’s good to see you.” It was. It’s strange how those you once loved can become strangers with a little work. I wouldn’t know half the shit I know about The Social if it weren’t for him. I probably wouldn’t even have this shitty blog if it weren’t for him. I thank him. For everything. Especially for introducing me to The Bright Light Social Hour – one of his favorite bands.
