Suicide Girls Interview 2017

Mitch, Founder, Shows I Go TO (SIGT) — It’s been great to watch SuicideGirls.com grow as a brand and touring now (BlackheartBurlesque.com) where you’re able to get in fan’s faces and meet people. It’s such a cool idea. How did you come up with the idea of the “Blackheart Burlesque Tour”?

Missy, Founder, SuicideGirls (SG) — We did a burlesque tour from 2003-2007 and it was more punk rock, free form, and fun. It really embodied the punk rock spirit. It was amazing — the girls toured Australia and hit Reading & Leeds Festivals in England and opened for Guns N’ Roses and Courtney Love. It was a really fun time.

We decided to take a break from touring so we could focus on creating a book. Then were asked to do movie.

In 2012 we sent two girls up the West Coast to do a “Book Signing Tour” and by the time they got to Santa Cruz, there was 500 people outside the comic book shop waiting to get autographs from just two girls.

We knew we could do better. We decided to put the tour back out on the road. In the years we took time off, the Burlesque world had really upped it’s game with the Star Wars Burlesque girls and even large-scale events like Lady Gaga.

We knew we had to do something that was more inventive then our whipped cream punk rock burlesque.”

We merged the girls’ interest in cosplay and ComicCon and pop culture with the sexy classic spirit of burlesque.

All of the numbers are pop-culture themed. We have a Sailor Moon number, a Westworld number, and our marriage of pop-culture and sexy burlesque all came together and created the Blackheart Burlesque.

SIGT: It’s so wonderful how you’ve grown this company. And you’ve touched so many people and made so many people happy and given people hope. People are so eager to be a part of Suicide Girls.

It’s so rad to start out doing something you really love and it might only be just for you and it grows into something beautiful. When you started SuicideGirls, what part of it was just for you?

SG: It was a leap of faith project. I created it because I wanted to be able to use it. I wanted to believe that the girls that I knew were the most beautiful girls in the world and that other people would appreciate them if I put them out there.

And that girls that look like me and my friends would be more beautiful and we could be stronger together.

If we had a place where we could share our voices then we could be stronger.”

It was entirely for me at first. I thought it would be popular in Portland, maybe Seattle. People agree that girls with piercings and tattoos and have unique outlooks on life that don’t want to “fit in,” and girls that are uniquely beautiful, are appreciated and there is an audience for them. People really connected with our community. They needed a place where they could be appreciated for themselves. People from all over the world had a common experience.

SIGT: That’s beautiful. Starting something can be very lonely at first. You think that you’re alone then all the sudden you start getting all these surprises, where you find all these people, in your case around the world, where they do connect, and they do feel the same things.

SG: The best part of starting Suicide Girls and the Burlesque tour is being able to make a difference in people’s lives and to have it really mean something to people.

It can save lives, too! My little thing saved my life. And I’m sure some of the people you’ve connected with, maybe even yourself, it’s saved their lives.

SG: Yeah! I have woman from around the world that have emailed me and said they never felt beautiful until they saw a girl that looked similar to them on SuicideGirls.com. They thought if she could be appreciated for being herself that maybe they’re pretty too. It helps build up their confidence. It’s so humbling to receive those emails and messages and realize that it means so much to people.

SIGT: Those are the kind of things that move you and can bring you to tears sometimes. And once you realize how wonderful you can make this world and how many other people there are out there that feel like you, it gives people hope. The fact that you’re giving people hope is so beautiful. It’s so amazing. And it’s such a pleasure talked to you and to be friends with people who have been personally touched by you. I can’t wait to see you guys on Friday, May 5 at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL.

SG: This is the first tour that we’ve booked ourselves. We have a full SuicideGirls touring crew — our tour manager, our merch girl, our tour assistants … are all Suicide Girls. It was choreographed by a Suicide Girl. We’re really excited about this one and hope everyone has a good time! 🙂

It’s such a pleasure to talk to someone who really has that heart inside and cares and gives people hope. You’re an inspiration to me personally. We’ll see you on Friday, May 5 at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL.
