Something In The Way Fest | Webster Hall | NYC, NY | December 14

by • December 12, 2016

Hey New York, there’s a pretty awesome festival coming your way! Something In The Way Festival 2016, presented by Run For Cover Records and Fred Perry Subculture, is taking over Webster Hall on December 14th. The one-day indie rock/emo-revival festival features Modern Baseball, Basement, Citizen, Turnover, mewithoutYou, Nothing, Alex G, Elvis Depressedly, Teen Suicide, Nicole Dollanganger, Petal, and Crying! I’ve had the chance to see quite a few of these bands over the past little while, but this festival is bringing them all together, so I thought I’d take you through the music of some of my favorites!

Modern Baseball is the quintessential punk band of today, with their songs laden down with catchy hooks and self-depreciation. They recently finished touring with Brand New, so you know they’re the real deal. They came out firing on all cylinders from Philidelphia in 2011, releasing Sports in 2012, and just hit the road, bringing the energy of their music to life on the stage. The last time I caught them, I ended up getting really drunk and not remembering most of the show, but I do remember having one of the best times I’ve had this year! They are definitely not a band to miss!

mewithoutYou is one of the more interesting additions to the lineup, but they are definitely deserving of it. One of the longest running post-hardcore bands around, mwY has been killing it for 16 years, with no signs of stopping. Another Philly band, I started getting into them through their almost spoken word art rock with some real screamo thrown in. In their later years, they’ve moved over to a more new emo sound, but still, one of the most intimate live acts I’ve ever had the chance to see!

I saved my favorite for last. Turnover is one of the best groups in existence right now, combining pop punk vibes with dream pop sounds, and just being utterly phenomenal at it. I can definitely say I’ve listened to their newest album, Peripheral Vision, more than I’ve listened to any other album ever. Their live show is even more infectious. When I saw them, I, maybe in some sort of inebriated haze, thought they even started to jam for a bit. Imagine that?! An emo jam! Seriously, you’d have to check them out!

And so, why are you hesitating? Something In The Way Festival is going to be a great fucking time and all the bands on the ticket are just excellent! In addition to the bands I’ve described, some of my other favorites are Elvis Depressedly and Teen Suicide. Two really great up and comers with extremely bright futures. Plus, you definitely have to see Citizen, a band in the vein of Brand New, but I could almost say their music is even sadder! Get out to Webster Hall, and have a blast!
