Another interesting week in the Hip Hop world has come and gone. Here are some of the biggest stories from the past seven days.
NEW ALBUM RELEASES ANNOUNCED
Fall 2015 is apparently the prime season for major Hip Hop releases. We can expect debut or follow up albums coming from Raury, Migos, Logic, and Dee-1 in the next few months. Mac Miller’s GO:OD AM, for which he dropped the single “Clubhouse” just yesterday is arguably one of the most anticipated projects. It’s almost certain there will be much more new Hip Hop on the way soon. Check out Mac’s single below and stay tuned.
MELLE MEL PRAISES MACKLEMORE, CALLS OUT TOP TIER EMCEES
The Hip Hop beef farm got a fresh crop of drama this week when legendary artist Melle Mel vouched for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ new joint “Downtown.” The song features Mel as well as Grandmaster Caz (of the Cold Crush Brothers) and Kool Moe Dee (of the Treacherous Three) and the guests also performed it with Macklemore at the 2015 MTV VMAs. In praising the duo, Mel also responded to fan criticism claiming cultural appropriation: “I know for a fact that J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar or Rick Ross or Jay Z or any of these cats, they would not have done [what Macklemore & Ryan Lewis did]. Ever.” Interesting words from one of Hip Hop’s pioneers to say the least. The real question is: Does he make a valid point or is he just blowing hot air? Peep the original news piece.
DETROIT RAPPER DEX OSAMA KILLED
In an all-too-familiar story coming out of the Hip Hop world, Detroit emcee Dex Osama, a Meek Mill associate, was shot and killed outside of a Detroit club on Monday morning. Reports are that the rapper and his group got into a dispute outside of the club, resulting in the fatal shooting. It is still unclear what the dispute was about. Osama was gaining popularity for his music on the streaming service Soundcloud. Condolences go out to the family of Osama, real name Byron Cox.
MEEK MILL GOES AT A DRAKE FAN
Ok, so now it’s just getting embarrassing. The remnants of the Drake vs. Meek Mill “beef” were still rippling this week as Meek called out a fan holding up a Pro-Drake sign at his show. Clearly annoyed, Meek told the fan he had better not “try to play me at my own show.” And later, the Philly rapper sent a member of his entourage out to check the guy. Just seems that while the rest of the world has moved on, Meek just can’t shake the ghost of his biggest misstep. Guess time really doesn’t heal all wounds.
50 CENT SUED FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING “POWER”
Lord knows this isn’t the first time Curtis has been at the center of a legal squabble. The latest incident apparently involves a writer named Larry Johnson claiming that Fif took a good chunk of his popular cable TV series “Power” from Johnson’s manuscript for a project called “Tribulations of a Ghetto Kid.” Johnson is now seeking $200 Million for the lawsuit. Truthfully, even if this one does have any legs to stand on, it’s safe to assume that with the bully mentality and business acumen 50 has developed over the years, it’s probably well on its way to being settled out of court.
