SIGT Weekly Hip Hop Stop – Dr. Dre, Kanye, Drake, Meek Mill, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

by • August 7, 2015

It’s been an interesting seven days in Hip Hop with the announcement of new music from Dr. Dre and Kanye West, the continuation of the Drake/Meek Mill Beef, and much more. Here are some of the top stories from this past week:

Dr. Dre’s Compton Album Is Now Available

For arguably over a decade, Hip Hop heads have been predicting and contemplating when legendary producer Dr. Dre would release the Detox album. Well, the wonder surrounding that body of work may have finally been put to rest. Dre has released Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre to the world. This is Dre’s first solo album in over 15 years, his last being 1999’s 2001. Only time will tell if Hip Hop fans have yet another classic album on par with The Chronic from the iconic beat maker/ to bump in the whip.

Kanye West’s “SWISH” LP Is Previewed In Toronto

The man named Yeezy has faced much backlash for his public rants and antics it has seemed to take away from attention to his music. But in addition to visiting Drake’s OVO Fest, fellow artist Theophilus London says that Kanye previewed his entire new album this past weekend. Admittedly, the public doesn’t really know what to expect from Ye’s new project. But that seems to be just the way Mr. West likes it. If his singles “Four/Five Seconds” and “All Day” are any indication, we can probably expect it to be as diverse and outside of the box as possible. Anything less from Kanye and we’d probably be severely disappointed.

No Let Up For Drake vs. Meek Mill

The drama between the mainstream’s favorite emcee/entertainer and the Philly battle rapper doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon. After Drake pretty basically dismantled Meek at his annual OVO Fest, he apparently has yet another diss tracked lined up and ready for aiming. Meek responded by calling Drake out at a live concert, but many fans believe it to be too little, too late. But now, Meek may be set to release a video for his “Wanna Know” diss of Drizzy. Is Drake getting into overkill territory and now becoming a bully to Meek? Will Meek’s career be able to recover from the brutal assault by everyone’s favorite sensitive emcee? We can only wait and see.

New Music From Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

The darlings of mainstream Hip Hop just a few short years ago have released a new song tackling the issue of fatherhood with the new joint “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song).” Macklemore and Lewis have never been artists to shy away from the harsh realities of the world in their music, and this song is no different. It’s hard to tell whether this will get them back to the success they enjoyed with titles like “Thrift Shop,” “Can’t Hold Us,” and “Same Love,” but they definitely have a lot going for them.
