Here’s a rundown of some of the biggest hip hop news of the week, including news of a new album from Nas and Kendrick Lamar’s album leaking to the public early.
NAS CONFIRMS HE IS DROPPING AN ALBUM IN 2017
It’s been a long minute since we’ve heard from God’s Son. But in an interview with Billboard, Nas reportedly said “for sure” when asked if he’d be releasing a new album this year. He’s said to be working on his 12th studio album as we speak. Thank you, Tiny Infant Jesus!
KENDRICK LAMAR’S DAMN. ALBUM LEAKS EARLY
Two years ago, K Dot’s To Pimp A Butterfly was dropped purposefully a few days early to the surprise of many fans. Now, just hours before the release of DAMN., the album has been leaked and many die-hard Kendrick fans are not pleased. Regardless, it’s safe to say that this is unquestionably the most anticipated hip-hop album of the year. Sorry, Drake.
JUST BLAZE SAYS A TIMBALAND VS. PHARRELL BEAT BATTLE IS COMING
Just Blaze and Swizz Beatz went head to head on Facebook Live just a few months ago for the culture. Now Just is saying that two more heavyweights, Timbaland and Pharrell, are set to square off in a beat battle. If it’s true, we’re most certainly licking our chops in anticipation!
REST IN PEACE, CHARLIE MURPHY
Known by many as the older brother of Eddie Murphy, Charlie had an acting and comedy career all his own. Known best for his hilarious True Hollywood Stories on Chappelle’s Show, Charlie sadly lost his long battle with leukemia and passed away at 57 earlier this week. He leaves behind three children.
JAY Z’S CATALOG IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY
In a move made clearly to benefit his streaming music service TIDAL, Jay Z requested that his music be pulled from competing streaming service Spotify earlier this week. Will it be of benefit to his fans or to TIDAL itself? Is there a method to Jay’s madness? The streaming wars continue.
