SIGT HIP HOP STOP W/ RON GRANT – Drake’s “Hotline Bling”, Meek Mill Beefs With Wale, Kevin Gates Heroin Use, Kanye’s “New” Music, MC Lyte Gives A College Scholarship, New Hip Hop Biopic Rumors

by • October 23, 2015

The week was so jam packed full of Hip Hop News, we had to add an addendum of highlights from more stories that didn’t make the final cut! Here’s a look at the week that was in the world of Hip Hop music.

DRAKE RELEASES VIDEO FOR “HOTLINE BLING”

Even if you’ve been sleeping under a rock covered by a boulder covered by a mountain, you’re probably still well aware of the phenomenon that is “Hotline Bling.” The video features Drake and a stable of females getting their grown folks dance on in bright, fluorescent artsy glory. Which caused the Internet to have absolutely no chill with a whole host of hilarious memes. Not only that, check out the video above and see how Drizzy got a shot out on Twitter from legendary department story JCPenney. 2015 is quickly turning into the year of Champagne Papi.

MEEK MILL VERSUS WALE

First the Drake beef debacle, now this. Meek Mill is back at it, this time taking offense against a former friend in Wale. When Wale said in a Breakfast Club Interview (above) that Meek “brought a pencil to a gun fight” in his woefully unsuccessful beef with Drake, the Philly rapper once again took to social media to call Wale out and formally kick him out of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group…at least in his own mind. Will things EVER turn around for our boy Meek? Here’s a full report from VIBE.com.

KEVIN GATES ADMITS TO USING HEROIN?

Was it a full on admission? Was he just joking? Was this an indirect cry for help? As of now, no one seems to know. But a video of new school emcee Kevin Gates has surfaced of his possible admission to using heroin. Take a peek of the video and judge for yourself. The drop came from an interview with DJBooth.net.

NEW TRACKS FROM KANYE WEST

OK, so maybe they’re not all that new. We get it. Still, the release of music from Yeezy is cause for celebration for many. With a rework of his own “Say You Will” and a take on The Weeknd’s “Tell Your Friends”, it’s hard to tell whether we should expect another 808’s and Heartbreak or if this is just Kanye messing around in the studio. So how much longer until we get that SWISH album, Yeezus?

MC LYTE AWARDS A $50,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Not only is she a legendary emcee, an entrepreneur, an activist and a board member at the prestigious Dillard University, MC Lyte is also a serious philanthropist. This past week, Lyte and her Hip Hop Sisters Foundation awarded 19-year-old Texas native Cortney Rhodes with a $50,000 scholarship on The Steve Harvey Show as part of an initiative called “Educate Our Men.” Peep the video below.

SYLVIA ROBINSON BIOPIC FROM THE WRITERS OF “EMPIRE”

The Hip Hop biopic train just doesn’t seem to let up. Now Warner Bros. has tapped two writers for the hit Fox series Empire to bring the life of Sylvia Robinson to the silver screen. Robinson founded Sugar Hill Records and is known in some circles as “The Mother of Hip Hop.” Will Empire writers Carlito Rodriguez and Michael Spellman be able to do her life justice? One thing is for sure: a movie like this will most definitely contain drama on top of drama. Stay tuned.
