Safety Congratulate Me, I’ve Lost My Mind EP album review

ALBUM REVIEW: ‘Congratulate Me, I’ve Lost My Mind’ EP by Safety | Released August 14, 2015

by • October 26, 2015

It’s a stomper from the start. Brooklyn transplants Safety released their latest EP, Congratulate Me, I’ve Lost My Mind, and that’s literally about the best way to describe listening to it — I’m hopelessly addicted.

Safety’s third release, debuted in August, offers a sharpness and sense of musicianship that has been built up over the years. It’s more honed than ever before with each of the five biting tracks.

As Tyler and Rebecca can attest in their interview, Safety has a special place in the scene–fostered in Florida and rapidly ascending to popularity in New York. But I’m a little saddened by their feelings about their hometown. I’m sorry about your bad memories in “Final Cosmic Flash,” but maybe don’t wish asteroids on us folks still in Tampa?! We still love you. 🙂

Just within a single track, Safety had me bouncing from pop-punk intros into darker, swooning riffs. “A Wealth of Sorrows in a Few Words” is head banging-ly mournful, morose yet energetic in an anthem to parting ways. The energies reminded me of early Story of the Year, before the darkness of “The Black Swan” swept in.

“Ultraviolet” shined on the indie qualities with rocking vibrancy. The lyrics ooze the brilliance of the colors and humanity, weaving an attractive take on such basic actions:

We are the colors of ultraviolet light, Hiding our secrets in plain sight, Masks we’ve made try to shade, Our detachment tonight”

Gorgeous, colorful, and truthful, all wrapped in a single chorus. It’s these gems tucked in rocking energy that are surprising moments of reflection and reverberation.

Safety has mastered the elements of storytelling and emotion in “Derealized.” It’s every emotion felt when your heart is broken, but even more so when it’s utterly abandoned.

This is the album needed when sorting through yourself and the impacts others cast upon you. Safety provides both the warm comforting embrace, the “I get you” energy, the cold shoulder, all tucked in an album.
